Rodent Proof Air tight Livestock Chicken Pet Feed Storage Bin and Dispenser
Rodent proof, air tight, first in/first out feed storage bin with easy to pull bottom lever dispenser.
I searched and found many feed storage bins, but none that met my standards for being rodent proof and easy to dispense. Also, the feed bins that you scoop feed from the top have you using the feed that you likely just put in there, and the oldest feed and crumbs on the bottom sit and rot and attract insects. Use these plans to build a reasonably priced, rodent proof, air tight, clean, sanitary and easy to dispense feed system.
First I selected an air tight drum with a tight and easy to seal lid. I wanted one that could hold 3 bags of feed (150 lbs of feed) so I selected this 30 gallon drum
(CLICK HERE TO ORDER THE SAME DRUM ON AMAZON).
Like many other people I custom mix my feed to get what my particular flock needs. This system is so much easier for that than mixing and storing small amounts in 5 gallon buckets. The only other thing I ordered was this pull drain.
(CLICK HERE TO ORDER THE SAME VALVE ON AMAZON).
Just lay out with a marker where the pull drain will mount to the bottom of the drum. You will see on the photos where this is. The drain comes with bolts and nuts. You just need to drill or cut a 2" hole in the drum for the drain, and drill 4 small holes for the 4 supplied bolts to mount.
So with just those two items to purchase (the drum and the valve), I made the base with some left over plywood I had in the shop.
Your lumber list consists of ...
(2) 16-1/2" long X 10" wide X 3/4" thick side panels
(1) 16-1/2" long X 12-1/2" wide X 3/4" thick back panel
(1) 16-1/2" long X 14" wide X 3/4" thick bottom panel
(1) 12-1/2" long X 2" wide X 3/4" thick center brace
(12) 2-1/2" drywall or wood screws
First screw the sides to the back. Then screw the bottom to the sides and back. Then screw the center brace about 3" in from the front (Just far enough back to not interfere with the valve)
Just place the drum on the stand, fill it with feed, put your 5 gallon bucket in place, and pull the lever. That's it. Enjoy!
Thanks so very much for this posting, your design and providing links to the parts.. I volunteer at a Cat Rescue and we made one to dispense Cat Litter.. tried it out today and it worked great.. the value be a problem over time as cat litter gets in there but we like the overall design so much we are going to make a second one.
ReplyDeleteWhat keeps it rodent proof? Rodents can chew thru plastic.
ReplyDeleteKeeps it out of reach since it's on a stand. However, they can chew through the stand since it's made of wood so.. I donno.
DeleteI just made one out of a garbage can and my stand is cinder blocks in a V shape. Rodents shouldn't be able to eat through them. I do recommend using something with a flat bottom as I had to use silicone caulk all the way around it. I also used a bigger hole saw to have hole as big as the valve, but with an uneven bottom, that is a mistake.
DeleteI could not have closed on my first home without Mr, Benjamin Lee ! Benjamin and his team went above and beyond for me on this transaction. He handled my very tight turn around time with ease and was always available for me when I had questions (and I had plenty), even when he was away from the office, which I greatly appreciated! He and his team handled many last-minute scrambles with the seller and worked tirelessly to make sure that I could close before my lease (and my down payment assistance, for that matter) expired. Mr Benjamin is an incredibly knowledgeable Loan Officer, courteous, and patient. I went through a couple offers on properties before my final purchase and Benjamin was there to help with each one, often coordinating with my agent behind the scenes. I felt supported throughout the entire process. Thanks to Benjamin and the tireless efforts of his team, I am now a proud homeowner! I would encourage you to consider Benjamin Briel Lee for any kind of loan.Mr, Benjamin Lee Contact informations.via WhatsApp +1-989-394-3740 Email- 247officedept@gmail.com.
